Wade Aubry MD

wade aubryWade M. Aubry, M.D. is Senior Clinical and Policy Advisor for the Center for Medical Technology Policy. Dr. Aubry is a clinician and health policy researcher based in San Francisco with extensive experience in the Blue Cross Blue Shield system and Medicare in the areas of technology assessment, coverage decisions, CPT coding, and quality measurement. He is currently Senior Medical Advisor for the Blue Shield of California Foundation’s California Technology Assessment Forum and an advisor to the Blue Cross Blue Shield Association on CPT coding issues. He is Associate Clinical Professor of Medicine at the Philip R. Lee Institute for Health Policy Studies at UCSF and a practicing endocrinologist at Saint Francis Memorial Hospital in San Francisco, where he chaired the hospital’s Institutional Review Board and served as Chief of Staff. Previously, he was Vice President of the Lewin Group, a health care consulting firm, Senior Vice President and Chief Medical Officer for Blue Shield of California, Medicare Part B Medical Director for Northern California, and National Medical Consultant for the BCBSA, where he chaired its Technology Evaluation Center’s national Medical Advisory Panel for several years.

Dr. Aubry received his B.S. degree Phi Beta Kappa from Stanford University, his M.D. degree from the UCLA School of Medicine, and his postgraduate training at Cedars-Sinai Medical Center in Los Angeles. He has served on NIH committees on clinical trials and managed care, IOM Committees on Technologies for Breast Cancer Detection (reported 2001) and Cord Blood Stem Cell Banking (reported 2005), and the AMA CPT-5 Committee overseeing the revision of the CPT coding system. He has also had ongoing contributions to the IOM Roundtable on Evidence-Based Medicine and has served two terms on the CMS Medicare Evidence Development and Coverage Advisory Committee (MedCAC). Currently, he is a member of the AHRQ Effective Health Care Program Stakeholder Group, the American College of Radiology Imaging Network (ACRIN) External Advisory Panel, and the National Committee for Quality Assurance (NCQA) Geriatrics Measurement Advisory Panel. His research interests include technology assessment, evidence-based medicine, and coverage decision making. Currently, he is a member of the UCSF Healthcare Technology Assessment Program Committee and the UCSF Effectiveness Center for the California Health Benefits Review Program (CHBRP), which produces evidence reports on proposed health insurance mandates in California. He teaches on medical technology and health care quality at UCSF, UC Berkeley, and UCLA, has lectured internationally, and has published numerous articles on medical technology and managed care. He is co-author of a comprehensive case study on bone marrow transplants for breast cancer entitled False Hope vs. Evidence-Based Medicine: Bone Marrow Transplantation for Breast Cancer, which was published in 2007.
